IFZA Crypto Licence

The cheapest way into a Dubai crypto company. IFZA is Dubai's most cost-effective free zone — a crypto-related licence from around AED 12,500 a year, a flexi-desk instead of a mandatory office, 100% foreign ownership and free-zone tax efficiency. It's ideal for proprietary trading, NFT, mining, metaverse and blockchain-dev businesses. Client-facing services (exchange, custody, brokerage) still need VARA on top — we scope and run both.

overview

What is the IFZA crypto licence?

If cost is the deciding factor, IFZA is the answer. The International Free Zone Authority is consistently the most affordable Dubai free zone for a crypto or blockchain company: a crypto-related licence starts around AED 12,500 a year, a flexi-desk satisfies the office requirement, and year-one totals for a technology-track operator land roughly at AED 25,000–50,000 — well below DMCC's comparable AED 60,000–120,000. You get 100% foreign ownership, no local sponsor, and free-zone tax efficiency on qualifying income.

As with any Dubai free zone, one thing must be clear: IFZA is where you incorporate the company, not a virtual-asset regulator. Virtual-asset activity in Dubai is regulated by VARA. An IFZA licence covers a defined set of crypto activities on its own — NFT marketplaces, proprietary trading, proprietary crypto mining, metaverse services and blockchain development (as a database, not a crypto ledger). But the moment you provide regulated, client-facing services — operating an exchange, holding client custody, brokerage or investment management — you must notify or seek authorisation from VARA in addition to the IFZA licence. We map exactly which activities your IFZA licence covers, set up the company at the lowest sensible cost, and add the VARA route only if your model needs it. (For the full client-facing route, see our [UAE/VARA crypto licence](/services/uae/licenses/crypto-licenses/) page.)

Which markets a IFZA licence reaches

An IFZA (plus VARA where required) setup authorises the approved activity in and from Dubai and supports global business, but it does not passport into the EU — serve EU users through an EU CASP. You still geoblock the United States, sanctioned and FATF-listed territories and any market requiring separate authorisation.

Operators must use GEO-IP blocking for restricted countries and any FATF-blacklisted nation. Non-compliance can lead to licence suspension or revocation.

IFZA crypto licence FAQ

Why is IFZA the cheapest Dubai crypto option?

IFZA sets a crypto-related licence from around AED 12,500 a year and accepts a flexi-desk instead of a mandatory office, so the year-one total (roughly AED 25,000–50,000) is well below comparable DMCC setups. You still get 100% foreign ownership and free-zone tax efficiency.

Is an IFZA licence a virtual-asset licence?

No. IFZA is a free zone where you incorporate; virtual-asset activity in Dubai is regulated by VARA. The IFZA licence covers defined activities — NFT marketplaces, proprietary trading, mining, metaverse and blockchain development — but client-facing regulated services (exchange, custody, brokerage) require VARA in addition.

What can I actually do on an IFZA crypto licence?

The permitted set includes NFT marketplaces, proprietary trading, proprietary crypto mining, metaverse services and blockchain development (as a database, not a crypto ledger). Anything that holds client funds or provides regulated VA services needs VARA.

IFZA or DMCC?

IFZA wins on cost; DMCC offers the deeper Crypto Centre ecosystem. For proprietary trading and lean Web3 setups, IFZA is usually the value pick. For either, client-facing services need VARA on top. We'll pick the cheaper route that fits your model.

Does it work in the EU?

No. An IFZA/VARA setup supports Dubai and global business but does not passport into the EU. To serve EU users you need an EU CASP licence.
