High-risk merchant accounts & banking.
Launches stall on payments far more often than on the licence. We set up high-risk merchant accounts, gateways and offshore business banking that actually accept gambling, iGaming and crypto operators, matched to your licence and markets, and built to survive onboarding and periodic review.
Who needs a high-risk merchant account.
Card networks and acquirers put gambling and crypto near the top of their risk tables, because of chargeback exposure, regulatory complexity and AML sensitivity. A mainstream provider that declines you isn't judging your business; your category is simply outside what it underwrites. If you take card or bank payments for any of the businesses below, you need an acquirer that underwrites high-risk merchants on purpose.
Which licence you hold decides which banks will talk to you. That is why we plan payments alongside the licence rather than after it, and why banking acceptance is part of choosing a jurisdiction in the first place. Our high-risk merchant account guide explains declines, rolling reserves and the multi-acquirer setup in full.
What we set up.
Why high-risk payments fail, and how we fix it.
How the setup runs.
- Licence and structure check (day 1) We confirm the licence and the operating entity will underwrite before anything is filed. Most declines start here, and they are cheaper to fix before an application than after one.
- Underwriting pack (weeks 1–2) Ownership chart, source of funds, AML and responsible-gaming policies, processing history or projections, assembled the way an acquirer's risk team reads them.
- Placement with acquirers and PSPs (weeks 2–6) We approach the providers that price your licence and your markets, and negotiate reserve, settlement and chargeback terms rather than accepting the template.
- Redundancy and monitoring (ongoing) A second rail and a crypto fallback go live before you need them, with the chargeback ratio watched against the card schemes' thresholds.
Expect the terms to reflect the category. In iGaming a rolling reserve of 5–10% of volume held for 90 to 180 days is typical, and Visa's Excessive threshold for merchants in the US, Canada, the EU and Asia-Pacific fell to 1.5% on 1 April 2026. The full cost picture, rates and reserves included, is on our iGaming payment solutions page.
High-risk merchant account questions.
What does Vantegris set up for a high-risk merchant account?
The whole payment stack around your licence: one or more merchant accounts with acquirers that underwrite your vertical, a gateway or PSP layer for methods and cascading, a business account with an EMI or neobank for settlement, and crypto rails where your licence allows them. For gambling structures we also set up the payment agent, which is always a Cyprus company.
Do I need a licence before I apply for a high-risk merchant account?
Yes. Acquirers underwrite a gaming or crypto merchant against the licence, and the jurisdiction on it decides which providers will quote at all. We start the payments work in parallel with the licence application, so the accounts can open soon after the licence is issued rather than months later.
How long does it take to get a high-risk merchant account?
On the timeline we publish, the underwriting pack takes one to two weeks and placement with acquirers and PSPs runs from week two to week six. The approval itself is the acquirer's credit decision, so we give you a date for our work, not a guaranteed approval date.
Where does the business bank account sit?
With an EMI or neobank that knowingly banks licensed high-risk operators, matched to your licensed entity. Mainstream banks are as cautious about gambling and crypto as mainstream acquirers, so we place the account where the vertical is accepted from the start.
What chargeback level puts a merchant account at risk?
Visa's monitoring programme (VAMP) flags a merchant as Excessive at a fraud-and-dispute ratio of 1.5% with at least 1,500 such events a month, a threshold that applies in the US, Canada, the EU and Asia-Pacific from 1 April 2026. Acquirers usually act well before that line, which is why we set up dispute tooling and a second rail from day one.
Do you work with crypto businesses as well as gambling operators?
Yes. Crypto exchanges, VASPs and crypto casinos go through the same underwriting logic, and a credible licence (a MiCA CASP authorisation or a VARA licence, for example) banks far better than an unregulated setup. Fiat on-ramps and off-ramps and stablecoin settlement run alongside the card rails.
